An ADI is one who gives driving lessons in a car in return for payment.
ADI must be on the Register of Approved Driving Instructors (ADI's).
To become an Approved Driving Instructor they must pass DSA examinations.
Two types of badges are issued by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) to instructors for display in tuition vehicles.
These badges will help you to visually identify instructor's qualification -
- Green, octagonal badge -The instructor is fully qualified and approved.
- Pink, triangular badge -The instructor is licensed under training and is not yet fully qualified.
The DSA authorized ADIs should be having the following qualifications.
- Must be having a full driving licence for the last 4 years.
- Passed successfully the complex ADI theory test.
- Registered with DSA.

Driving instructor has to pass following examinations -
- Theory test
- Driving ability assessment
- Test of instructional ability
The exams are taken on separate occasions, and there are usually significant waiting times between tests.
To be entered in the Register of Approved Driving Instructors you must pass all three parts of the Qualifying examination within a two-year time period, starting from the day you pass part one, and have paid the requisite registration fee. To get the license, you must pass the first two parts of the qualifying examination.
As you pass or clear the second part of the qualifying examination known as the driving ability assessment, then only you can apply for a trainee licence to help you prepare for the third part known as the test of instructional ability.
Those who have cleared or passed the examinations can get a licence to acquire practical experience which is strictly restricted to six months. ADI's are frequently tested by the DSA to make sure that there continued skill to provide instruction meets or satisfied the required standards.
The ADI's act as a professional towards learner driver at all times. At all times learners drivers are treated with respect and concern.
